The Bug Guy Chronicles – #55

Happy New Year to All! We hope that your holiday season was filled with much happiness, family, friends, and true blessings…and not with uninvited bugs or critters.

Speaking of Bugs, this past week we had several calls regarding The Ladybird Beetle, more commonly known as the Lady Bug. Lady Bugs are the most widely used and best-known form of biological pest control. They help control aphids, whitefly, mealybugs, scales, mites and many other soft-bodied insects. For about 7 months out of the year everybody is happy to see Lady Bugs. They are good luck, fun to watch, fun for the kids to catch and it means they are out in your garden controlling pests. The rest of the year they are looking for a nice warm spot to over-winter, sometimes in your home.

I know, you’re saying “wow, that’s great, but they are in my house and I don’t want them here.” I totally understand. There are many theories as to why the Lady Bug will choose one house over another, but the one common observation is that their activity is generally on the side of the home that has the most western exposure. I say this because, if you are having an issue with Lady Bugs, concentrate on the west side of your home.

While the Lady Bug does not damage your home or the contents, they can be a nuisance. The preferred control process is relocation…being that these are beneficial bugs. Placing a nylon stocking into the hose of your vacuum, creating a filter, will allow you to collect them easily and then release them outside. If this method is not the approach you wish and you prefer to “eliminate” this nuisance, then you will need to apply an appropriately labeled product to the exterior foundation, eaves and window casings. Additionally, dusting of the attic areas will also be beneficial.

If you have experienced insect activity in your home and ever wondered how that bug got there, you may want to “look up”. Look up in the attic area. Insects have thousands of ways to enter our homes, especially our attic areas, and then travel to our recessed lights, fans, other ceiling penetrations and enter our living areas. You have heard me discuss attic dusting over the years and this application will give you long-term benefits, usually 1-2 years. However, if you utilize your attic for storing items you commonly use throughout the year, be very careful because the dust will settle on these items.

Well, Winter will be over soon and the bug kingdom will be back in full swing. If you are not preparing your property now for their invasion, you will be three steps behind.
