What a change…from the mountains of Utah to Montgomery County! Just returned from Spring Break vacation with the family in the snow, to rain and 80 degree humid weather…ain’t it great!! (I’ll take our weather and terrain over the snow, slush, cold and “hills”, any day.)
Well, Spring/Summer is just around the corner and we all know what that means…Spring storms, rising temperatures, and the bugs! (See, I told you it wouldn’t get cold enough to make a big difference in the bug world.) I am hoping that this issue makes your table before the Big Swarm…Termite Swarm. Yes, it’s that time again, so be on the look out for our winged friends. We are already seeing swarming ants, but swarming termites look different and should be treated accordingly. Below is a key to help you identify.
Should you locate hundreds of termite swarmers in the interior of your home, please contact a pest control company before cleaning up the insects. This will allow the technician to better identify the location of activity. Hopefully, you will not experience the interior swarm because that means the termites have been in walls for quite some time and the degree of damage may be severe. Termites are and will be an insect that we will have to deal with in our area. It has been said that are only two types of properties…those that have termites now and those that will have termites in time.
With that being said, what should you do to protect your property? First, have your property inspected by a licensed pest control operator that performs termite treatments and knows what to look for. Conducive conditions should be identified and corrected. A preventative treatment should always be considered in our region and especially for those properties with many conducive conditions.
Termite treatments vary due to the type of termite, construction type, area of activity and economics. However, conventional chemical and baiting systems are the treatment types most utilized in our area. Some companies offer both forms of treatment and should be able to discuss the benefits of each so that you can make the best decision for your property and budget. Cost is not the only item to make your decision on. You should take into consideration how long the company has been in business and performing termite treatments, the contract, the warranty, the type of chemical or baiting system being offered and the individual performing the service. In most situations you should not feel rushed into making your decision. Even if you have termites active in your home, a few more days to research will not cause your property to fall apart. Make the right decision for you and your property.
All other bugs will steadily be appearing, so get ready. If you would like to prevent these unwanted insects from entering your property; tired of chasing fire ants around your lawn all last year and wish to do something more exciting; or, couldn’t sit outside for than more than 5 minutes before the mosquitoes sent you inside…there are alternatives. Give us a call and we can discuss what’s “Bugging” you.
