Are we in Texas??? Can’t be…it’s May and it’s 80 degrees at high noon…go figure.

(Must be some really hot weather on the way!) Enjoy, before it gets here.

So what’s new on the bug front? Well, I thought I would address fire ant control and misting systems. If I have heard it one time I’ve heard it a hundred…”I bait the mounds but they just move over ten feet or so…why?” Baiting the mounds is a good practice. However, you must also treat/bait the remaining area in order to obtain total control. (This is probably mentioned on the label of the product you are utilizing, you just didn’t read that part.) Many of the over the counter products are effective at stopping fire ants.

The key is to determine how long the product is effective, additional applications needed, quantity of the product required to properly treat the area, and the cost for total treatment in accordance to the label. Or, contact a pest control professional and ask about a Top Choice Fire Ant application. This product is guaranteed to last 12 months. The technician will apply the granular product to areas discussed and then spot treat each active mound in that area. Top Choice is not a fast acting product, but will remain effective for 12 months. So that you are not caught off guard, Top Choice is not an inexpensive product…but, it works and you don’t have to walk around the yard every Saturday baiting the mounds.

Ok Cary, I keep hearing about these “misting systems”…what are they all about? First off, let’s all agree that a Spider System, Mosquito System, and an Automated Insect Control system are all the same. The operating unit, tubing, nozzles, and available insecticides are all the same. The only difference is where and how they are designed and installed.

The spider system is designed to be installed under the eaves to minimize spider accumulation and webbing build-up. The key to a successful “spider system”, in my opinion, is the location of the nozzles…generally 6-8 feet apart. (And, be prepared to still have webbing) The “spider system” works by controlling the flying insects that they feed on. However, the system is not operating 24 hours a day, therefore total control of spiders utilizing the system will not be obtained. Conventional pest control applications, mechanical alterations and web removal will greatly assist in minimizing the spider population.

The Mosquito Misting system is designed and installed to protect a specific area from invading mosquitoes. For instance, a deck area, patio, play area, around the pool, or a combination of any of these areas. Identification of the areas you would like to spend more time in without fighting off mosquitoes. Once the “area” is determined the system is designed so that you can obtain maximum protection while enjoying these areas. Can you expect to encounter zero mosquitoes? No. But, you will be amazed at just how few mosquitoes you will see and you can expect to spend more time outside without taking a bath in OFF or lighting torches. For those of you that live around the lake, the system works great at controlling the “lake flies”, as well. Let me also say that if you are the type of person that “always” get eaten up by mosquitoes no matter what you put on, the chances are that this will not solve that problem either…sorry. (Some individuals just attract mosquitoes more than others… I can’t explain it…they just like you…you’re their type (A/B or O)) One the neat features of the mosquito system is that they have a remote control. This will allow you to operate your system just before you go outside and give you that extra protection.

All of these systems are designed to operate like a sprinkler system. There is a controller that has a clock, that is programmed to operate at specified times, for a specified amount of time. Generally, they are programmed to come on at times when you are not outside and only operate for 30-45 seconds. There are only a few products labeled for usage in these systems. You cannot put just any product in the system.

In closing, we just installed a system for my neighbor. They like to sit on the front porch to read the paper and visit and sip an adult beverage (in the evening). But before the system they had to do all those other things (you know…bath in OFF, light the torches, etc.) before they went outside and were still run indoors before they wanted to leave…now they spend more time rocking, sipping and talking in the great outdoors of their front porch. If you would like to spend more time outdoors with those you love then give us a call, maybe we can make that happen.

Until next time, if you’re tired of ”swatin, stompin and throwin” things at bugs…give us a call…we’ll Chase’em away …to your neighbors.
